CELEBRATING WORLD BRAIN DAY 2019

The Department of Neurosciences of the Philippine General Hospital partook in celebrating World Brain Day last July 22, 2019. In association with the Philippine Neurological Association Headache Council and the Philippine Headache Society, the Department joined the World Federation of Neurology and International Headache Society in making this day eventful. Lay Fora were held in several institutions all throughout the Metro as well as in other sites in Luzon and Visayas. The focus for this year’s Lay Fora was the painful truth on migraines.

In the Philippine General Hospital, the Lay Forum was led by Doctors Martha Lu-Bolaños and Maria Lina Renales at the Emergency Room Complex 218. Several participants were invited to attend the special talk entitled “2019 Update on Migraine” delivered by Dr. Renales. Patients who suffered from migraines and healthcare professionals determined to know more about this very important disease attended the event.

Thanks to the notable talk by Dr. Renales, the participants learned numerous things about migraines. Migraine affects more than 10% people worldwide. It has a profound impact on individuals yet remains under-recognized and under-treated. Included in the discussion was the ICHD classification of migraine, several of its differential diagnoses and the clinical evolution of migraine. Finally, the different lifestyle and behavioral interventions in the prophylaxis of migraines were discussed.

The wealth of information shared that day was vast. Patients and healthcare professionals alike benefited from the discussion. Thanks to the forum, migraines will no longer go under-recognized and under-treated!
